Meet Chantel Kapeller, Facilities Engineer

As National Engineering month comes to a close, we’re sharing Chantel Kapeller’s story about her experience as a Civil Facilities Engineer with Irving Shipbuilding Inc. (ISI).

A graduate of Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chantel joined Irving Shipbuilding as a member of the Facilities Engineering team where she is responsible for managing capital projects and providing subject matter expertise on all civil-related tasks.

“The best part about my job is the opportunity to analyze problems and provide technical solutions that contribute to the overall success of the business,” says Chantel. “Due to the nature of our operations, I value the exposure I have had to the different environments across all ISI sites! It is very rewarding to have the opportunity to provide the organization with safe and quality results through developing new or supporting existing systems and structures.”

Throughout Chantel’s time with ISI, she has worked on a variety of multi-discipline projects for ISI’s primary and secondary sites. A day in Chantel’s life as a Civil Facilities Engineer is focused mainly on overseeing design consultants to ensure project requirements are met and managing contractors to guarantee compliance with site policies.

“At ISI, the Facilities Engineering team is responsible for managing capital and major maintenance projects, as well as providing technical support for facilities infrastructure,” says Chantel. “We are the decision-makers that make the right choices, to keep the right equipment on site, ready to go at the right time, for the right cost.”

Chantel describes the foundation of success in engineering as the desire to know how or why things work. “If you enjoy problem-solving and are goal-oriented, engineering might be the right career for you!” Says Chantel. “There are endless paths available for different types of interests and if the challenge of hard work is accepted, you will enjoy the rewarding benefits of a career in engineering.”
