Irving Shipbuilding Marine Trades Initiative Accepting Applications for Fully Funded Welding Training at NSCC

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. (ISI) and Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) are accepting applications for the next cohort of the Irving Shipbuilding Marine Trades Initiative. The $3.306M investment created 60 fully funded trade spots in 2025 and will add 20 new welding trade spots at NSCC in September 2026.

The Irving Shipbuilding Marine Trades Initiative offers free tuition for specialized training in welding, metal fabrication, and pipe trades, equipping students with the essential skills required in today's evolving marine sector. This initiative is an investment in the future of Canada’s marine industry, removing barriers and providing training opportunities for new skilled tradespeople.

Beginning in September 2026, ISI will cover all aspects of the two-year welding diploma program for 20 students. Participants will apply through ISI and be enrolled directly by NSCC as full-time students.

Under the National Shipbuilding Strategy’s Value Proposition, ISI is committed to investing in research and initiatives to support a vibrant and sustainable marine industry in Canada.

“We are proud to welcome our second cohort of welding students into the Irving Shipbuilding Marine Trades Initiative. This ongoing investment will help to develop and grow the next generation of skilled tradespeople in Canada's marine industry. Investing in training and educational opportunities not only expands knowledge and capability for Canadians, but also strengthens the future of marine innovation in Canada.” Lee Fromson, Vice President Supply Chain & Quality, Irving Shipbuilding Inc.

NSCC President Don Bureaux adds, “We have seen first-hand how programs like the Irving Shipbuilding Marine Trades Initiative can transform lives. Removing financial barriers offers an accessible pathway for those wanting to pursue a career in our vital marine sector.” He adds, “We’re grateful for this continued partnership with Irving Shipbuilding and look forward to welcoming the new welding class in the fall.”

Applications are open until February 23.
